One of the best ways to face adversity is to use it as an opportunity for growth. Albert Einstein said, “In the middle of adversity there is great opportunity.” The thing that makes the difference is our perspective and determination to succeed.
Here are four ideas for turning adversities into opportunities:
Accept that things have changed and grow from there We can spend so much time lamenting over our situation and looking back at how things could have been different, but that kind of thinking only leads to a sense of despair and stuck-ness. We need to find ways to learn from the past without dwelling in it. When we accept life as it is, and look forward to what can be, we allow ourselves to see the opportunities in the here and now, which can springboard us to an even brighter tomorrow.
Be curious and open to new ways of doing things When old ways aren’t working, we need to try something new. If we can identify our problems and challenges, we can brainstorm solutions. Researching new ideas and getting the perspectives of others can help us think outside the box. Having constraints, brought on by adversity, can help spark creativity. If we keep ourselves open to better methods and strategies, there is no limit to the progress we can make.
Be determined to succeed and not give up Being determined to succeed means taking responsibility for our situation and our solutions, even if that means asking for help. Rather than feeling like a victim and giving the control of our lives to someone else, we can choose to square our shoulders, roll up our sleeves, and go to work. If decisions determine destiny, then we need to be willing to make those decisions and then keep moving forward regardless of the challenges.
Seek God’s help God is more powerful than any obstacle we face. He can inspire us, guide us, and strengthen us. The scriptures teach, “(We) can do all things in Christ” (Philippians 4:13). As we prayerfully decide the best course of action and move forward with faith, God can guide our steps, magnify our abilities, and correct us when we get off course.
The scriptures teach, “…all things work together for good to them that love God.” (Romans 8:28) If we let it, adversity can be the thing that makes us stronger and better. I love the quote that says, “There are no great people in this world, only great challenges which ordinary people rise to meet.” (William Halsey Jr.) Let us each seize the opportunity in our adversities and use them to grow and become better.
