Incremental Positive Change

We often shy away from behavior change because it seems too overwhelming. We let ourselves think we have to do everything all at once if we want to be successful. The scriptures, however, teach us that, “by small and simple things are great things brought to pass” (Alma 37:6). This inspired council can be applied when making positive change in the area of health and wellbeing. Small actions, done consistently over time, not only helps us create habits that can be enlarged, but they also move us in a positive direction which strengthens our ability to create more positive change. If we’ve been putting off change, let's consider incorporating 1-2 of the ‘small and simple’ changes listed below.

  • Read for 10 minutes a day
  • Write about 1 thing each day that you’re grateful for
  • Take a 10 minute walk at lunch
  • Make your bed first thing each morning
  • Spend 1-2 minutes in mindful meditation each day
  • Take a minute or two to ponder after praying
  • Take the stairs
  • Add an extra vegetable to your dinner each night
  • Do a 20 second plank each morning
  • Start the day with a positive affirmation
  • Replace 1 diet soda with a healthier option each day
  • Do weight-bearing exercise once a week
  • Turn off your phone at night
  • Start the day with 3-4 deep breaths
  • Slow down while eating and enjoy your food
  • Do a 7-minute HIIT routine each day
  • Take a few minutes to connect with a friend, co-worker, or family member each day

As we continue to add small positive changes, we will be able to bring about ‘great things’ in our health and wellbeing.
