Christlike Attributes: Temperance

Elder Kent D. Watson gave a talk in the October 2009 General Conference about temperance, one of the characteristics of Christ. Often, we define temperance as "exercising restraint" or "refraining from losing one's temper", but Elder Watson reminds us that temperance is much more than being able to keep one's cool; it is a spiritual gift.

Elder Watson describes a time when, in a car accident, his broken windshield did not injure him because it was made of tempered glass. "Tempered glass, like tempered steel, undergoes a well-controlled heating process which increases strength. Thus, when tempered glass is under stress, it will not easily break into jagged shards that can injure."

We may often face stress in the workplace, whether it be tight deadlines or a floor-length to-do list or countless other pressures, so our wellness could determine the fate of others around us at work, including both colleagues and students. If we fail to develop temperance, we could injure not just ourselves but also our colleagues. When we take time to be a "temperate soul", we strengthen not only ourselves but also our colleagues and the students we come in contact with.
